This record marks the spirit of those 25 years of creativity, a paean to the psychedelic music of Dimitri's youth. From the signature magnetic soundscapes of Vainqueur to the dark textures of upcoming Beijing producer Shao, from Jon Hassell's slow epicurean volutes, to the ritual auras of Marcelus and Claudia Anderson's contributions, from the dub-infused pioneering programming of Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald, to Mønic's enthralling cadences, it represents some of the old and new names that continually epitomise Tresor's perennial spirit of ingenuity. We were space pioneers, says Dimitri. When Tresor founder Dimitri Hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in East Berlin on March 13th 1991, he had little idea that the space he had unlocked would fast become one of Berlin's most influential and enduring techno clubs. We didn't know what would happen 10 months later, he says. We signed a lease for a year. Which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another three months... As Tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the US, Germany, China, France, Austria, Italy and the UK, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed Detroit techno - economic neglect and broken industry - were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification East Berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression. Today, though the boom and bust of globalised capitalism has filled the void that followed the Berlin Wall, and techno has become a worldwide industry, we face a new political chapter, one defined by populism, nationalism and mistrust. Contemporary creatives should take inspiration from Tresor's story, an extraordinary experiment born from improvisation, resourcefulness and social neglect that uplifted the spirits of inner city communities for a quarter-century. The East Berlin of 1991 may have disappeared to gentrification, with Tresor's lonely vanguard joined by an army of venues catering to an international array of clubbers benefiting from low cost travel, many of whom settle in the city for good. Berlin is Europe's economic engine, headquarters to global industry and sole traders alike, where Polish, Kurdish and English are as likely to be spoken as German. That range of influences is felt in all areas of life, not least in the city's music. Without Tresor, Berlin would not be what it is today, concludes Dimitri. Even though it sounds a bit pretentious, it is true. Tresor was the prototype for an extraordinary club. It was only possible as a combination of the right time, the right place, the right content and determined people. Excerpt of liner notes, by Rob Sharp - November 2016. TRACKS: 1. Shao - Sensi (Edit) 2. Terrence Dixon - The Switch (Edit) 3. Juan Atkins & Moritz von Oswald - Electric Dub (Edit) 4. Mønic - What Lies Behind Us 5. TV Victor - La Beff 6. Robert Henke a.k.a. Robert Henke is back with a new album under his Monolake alias. Instead of simply being a collection of tracks, it has a deeper story. Here it comes: *In the late 1970s, a series of significant enhancements in technology further accelerated the evolution of the digital age. Graphical interfaces, networked computers and new software tools allowed to design and manufacture integrated circuits with tens of thousands of functions on one chip, a process called Very Large Scale Integration - VLSI. The structures became so complex, that for the first time computers were needed to build the next generation of even faster computers. * As a result of that evolution, the heart of a computer could now be put onto a single chip - the microprocessor was born. It made possible the move from large mainframe systems to personal computers, allowed teenagers to build systems in garages and become billionaires, gave birth to the game industry, and also enabled the creation of completely new electronic musical instruments: digital sound generators, drum machines, samplers and effects. * Most of the signature sounds on the VLSI album were programmed using early digital synthesisers, machines built by individuals or small teams of adventurous engineers and music enthusiasts during the 1980s, stretching the imagination of what could be done with a handful of chips and a good idea. * The VLSI album is sonic archeology. Tiny artefacts of the instruments used have been carefully excavated and brought to new light. What was once perceived as limitation and dirt can now be experienced as character, colour and patina. The interaction with these machines guided a minimalist and structural approach to sound and rhythm, expanded and re-contextualised into a futuristic soundtrack, utilising the recording technology of 2016. The result is inspired by early techno, UK breakbeat and dubstep, african dance rhythms, future glitch, ambient and a variety of amazing academic computer music. * The concept for VLSI emerged during an artist residency at the Center for Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University in 2013, which helped me understand not only some deeper technical aspects of my trade, but also the social and cultural peculiarities of Silicon Valley. * Thus, the VLSI album is also a reflection of very present social, economic and political topics driven by high tech companies more powerful than governments. The dystopian undercurrent in the music is deliberate. * Some of the 'historic' instruments used: * Alesis Quadraverb Dynacord DRP-20 Emu Systems SP-12 Turbo Ensoniq ASR-10R Eventide Eclipse H3000 Lexicon PCM-80 480L Korg DDD-1 Linn Linn Drum NED Synclavier II Oberheim Xpander PPG Wave2.3 Quantec Yardstick SCI Prophet VS Yamaha DX27 DX7 * VLSI marks the endpoint of a series of six EPs, released between 2014 - 2016. The source material from these EPs has been re-arranged and augmented for the album, with additions of previously unreleased pieces. TRACKS: 1. Arit 2. Inwards 3. Crash 4. LogC 5. Geometry Engine 6. Dystopia 7. Pio 8. Error 9. Unit 10. Nmos 11. Glypnir

Ambient techno exponent, A Sagittariun, fires off another full-length album transmission this April on his own Elastic Dreams label. 'Elasticity' is the Bristol based artist's second long player, and the follow up to his acclaimed 2013 debut, 'Dream Ritual'. Having last released a trio of singles in early 2015 (for Hypercolour, Secret Sundaze and Elastic Dreams), 'Elasticity' marks a return for A Sagittariun, and fans of the slippery and elastic sounds that hallmarked his debut album will not be disappointed. 'Dream Ritual' helped firmly establish A Sagittariun as an artist whose musical chops and integrity operate largely outside of the mainstream and a producer who chooses to put the music firmly center stage, whilst opting to remain relatively anonymous within the music scene. A Sagittariun explains, Elasticity was recorded over quite a short period, but the sketches and ideas have been germinating for some time, so sonically it's very coherent and consistent and moves in a way that I personally like albums to move in, with a narrative and flow that holds you right to the end. The recipe for Elasticity was always to be malleable and pliable with the sounds and tempos, for me it's all about the listening experience, and creating a landscape and a world within that one can really get deep into and explore, it's optimistic and progressive music for the head, heart and feet. I really do advise the listener to don headphones and take the trip with me. Over the album's 11 tracks, and a supporting cast of 'transmissions' from the likes of Robert Anton Wilson and Terrence McKenna, 'Elasticity' delves into a myriad of textured sounds and pliable rhythms, touching of ambient, industrial, breaks and dub influences. A two track 12 single, Contortion/Concrete Walls will be released one month prior, and features a couplet of 140 BPM techno tracks. TRACKS: 01. Architect Of Your Existence 02. Blim Burn 03. Transmission from Jesse 04. Apokalypsis 05. Composition ? 06. Transmission from Terrence 07. The Naming Of The Names 08. Chapter & Verse 09. Slowdive 10. Telescopium 11. Transmission from Alan 12. Quickness 13. Resurrection Of A Memory 14. Transmission from Robert 15. Black Starliner 16. Transmission from Myrtle Avenue

Posthumanism

This timely book examines the rise of posthumanism as both a material condition and a developing philosophical-ethical project in the age of cloning, gene engineering, organ transplants and implants. Nayar first maps the political and philosophical critiques of traditional humanism, revealing its exclusionary and speciesist politics that position the human as a distinctive and dominant life form. He then contextualizes the posthumanist vision which, drawing upon biomedical, engineering and techno-scientific studies, concludes that human consciousness is shaped by its co-evolution with other life forms, and our human form inescapably influenced by tools and technology. Finally the book explores posthumanism s roots in disability studies, animal studies and bioethics to underscore the constructed nature of normalcy in bodies, and the singularity of species and life itself. As this book powerfully demonstrates, posthumanism marks a radical reassessment of the human as constituted by symbiosis, assimilation, difference and dependence upon and with other species. Mapping the terrain of these far-reaching debates, Posthumanism will be an invaluable companion to students of cultural studies and modern and contemporary literature.
